The MBFAA Apprenticeship Program

As technology advances, there is a continuous demand for the development of communications, safety, security, audio/visual, and building control systems. Get on the ground floor of this growing industry!

The Missouri Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (MBFAA) has developed a Department of Labor approved apprenticeship program in the state of Missouri that will provide specialized training to those who are interested in becoming a certified journeyman technician in fire alarm and security technology.

The MBFAA is a state charter of the National Burglar and Fire Arm Alarm Association and Electronic Security Association (ESA), which has evolved into the largest professional trade association in the United States.  These associations were established with the purpose of representing, promoting, and enhancing the growth and professional development of the electric life-safety, security, and integrated systems industries.

Combining the skills of an electrician with those of an information technology specialist, qualified apprentices of the MBFAA program will attend selected education institutions to receive professional training on the most up-to-date systems technologies.

The MBFAA has collaborated with Ranken’s Information Technology and Electrical departments to design a state-of-the-art two-year evening program, leading to a certificate in the MBFAA Apprenticeship Program. The MBFFA in partnership with Ranken Technical College has developed on online webinar that is available to support the program throughout the state of Missouri.

Students will spend roughly 650 hours in advanced labs and online subjects, where they will be supported by industry professional institutions utilizing well-known technical training methods.  Once the student signs up for an apprenticeship program, they will be provided with on-the-job training through their MBFAA member employer.  The webinar work is accomplished concurrently with the job training of 8000 hours.  Credit up to 4000 hours can be given for previous on the job (OTJ) training.  This unique collaboration is a one of a kind program throughout the state of Missouri.

Curriculum, Opportunities and Careers

Gain technical knowledge and skills through a trusted educational provider and acquire national certification through the U.S. Department of Labor.

CURRICULUM

Students will learn the processes necessary to understand, integrate and install alarm and security systems. The first and second semesters are focused on the electrical portion of the program, while the third and fourth semesters concentrate on systems integration, fire alarm, security, sound and information technology systems.

APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The MBFAA, Electronic Security Association (ESA), the Department of Labor, and Ranken Technical College have worked in concert to create this unique opportunity for the state of Missouri. Other educational institutions will be developed as partners throughout the state of Missouri. The MBFAA and the Department of Labor will help and guide students in the on-the-job training program. This will give students the perfect blend of on-the-job training and classroom instruction. The educational institutions will be working with top industry vendors to ensure that students will get the proper hands-on training on a wide variety of industrial equipment commonly seen in the field.

UPON COMPLETION

Once students complete the MBFAA Apprenticeship Program, they will be prepared for work and already trained for the field. They will be prepared to take the NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) Level II certification in Fire Alarm Systems required within the industry. The successful graduates will receive a certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor that is transferrable to other states participating in the national apprenticeship program.
